A Celebration of Opera

The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society presents “A Celebration of Opera” at St Michael’s Cave on Tuesday 19 May at 8.00 pm. The concert is sponsored and organised on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.

Following huge successes over the past seasons with its opera concerts, the Society has decided to repeat the formula which proved so effective where two voices singing popular operatic arias are accompanied by a pianist.

Russian soprano Elena Gorshunova has won several international awards as 1st prize of the International German Competition of Anneliese Rothenberger, the Geneva International Competition (2003), the Rimsky-Korsakov International Competition (2004), 3d prize at the International Competition of Elena Obraztova (2005).  Elena Gorshunova took part in the International Competition of Opera singers Operalia (final). Elena Gorshunova has worked with such conductors as Valerij Gergiev, Kent Nagano, Karel-Mark Chichon, Paolo Olmi, Luciano Acocella, Vlaidmir Jurowski, Michael Güttler, Alberto Zedda, Nicola Luisotti, Giorgio Morandi, Asher Fisch, Rani Calderon and Julia Jones.

Álex Vicens with his warm, beautiful and powerful tenor voice has collected applauses and great critics at world theaters such as “Stuttgart’s Staatsoper”, Baden Baden’s “Festpielhaus”, Barcelona’s “Palau de la Música Catalana”, Innsbruck’s “Tiroler Landes Theater”, Madrid´s “Teatro de La Zarzuela”, “The Palm Beach Opera” and Barcelona’s “Gran Teatro del Liceo”.

The programme includes arias by Händel, Verdi, Donizetti, Flotow, Bizet, Gounod and Massenet.

The two singers accompanied by pianist David Aronson, promise a night to remember!

Minister for Culture, the Hon Steven Linares, said “I am very pleased to welcome these professional artists to Gibraltar and I hope that the audience find it to be just as popular as last year’s concert of opera pieces.”
