Runner Up Poem for School Years 11-13

Leah Borg for 'Algun Dia'

Enamorado, engafiado

Acariciado, pataleado

Soy su burbuja de amor

EI bal6n que bota de muro en muro

Lagrimas corren par mis mejillas

Como lIuvia torrencial

Totalmente ignoradas

Como si no existieran

Risas falsas en mi mente

Muy felices para los dernas

Viene y va como la marea del mar

A veces traicionera a a veces calma

Pienso y pienso

Un dia cambiara

EI terror de mi tormenta

En arco iris se convertira

Pero me acobardo

De intentar explicarlo

Ni a ella

Ni a nadie

En mi mente

Las risas de amigos y familiares

Explotan como un globo lIeno de agua

Derramando el contenido y ahogando mis sentidos

Judge Charlie Durante's Comments:

"We are dealing again with the familiar topos of unrequited or rejected love and its vicissitudes. Though a well-known topic in literature, Leah’s poem manages to give it a novel spin so that we are impressed by the images used: the male speaker is a mere ‘burbuja  de amor’, a bubble easily pricked, ‘el balón’, a football bouncing off a wall, ‘atrapado como un pájaro’, a bird caught in a trap, its wings damaged and unable to fly.  The speaker’s vulnerability is movingly conveyed by the fragile images of the wounded bird and the easily burst bubble.  But amidst the despair and pain there is a glimmer of hope: he is confident one day his torment will metamorphose in to a rainbow, ‘el terror de mi tormenta en arco iris se convertirá’.  This image, ultimately derived from the Bible, promises release and comfort.  Though the poem deals with a conventional theme, the language and imagery are fresh and newly-minted.  A very promising poem indeed."
