Christian has harboured a lifelong interest in the history and classical iconography of the horse, exploring its portrayal in European art and literature as well as in global mythologies and cultures. With the rise of automobiles and the decline of the horse's role in transportation and war, the horse became less prominent as a subject in modern art. His attempt to revisit this subject with a deep appreciation of the horse as both a majestic creature and a cultural symbol has inspired some of his most significant works. In 2019 Christian visited Cairo in Egypt. Here he encountered the Arabian horse for the first time. “These horses love the desert. They seem to revel in this environment and seem more beautiful in it”. Christian worked with a synesthete in America who helped him interpret the smell of spices in the desert which he claimed played a big part of his experience of seeing. The synesthete helped him to interpret the smells in color which he then applied as patches on the paintings. This was another creative way to incorporate and bridge his love for both science and art.
