This display presents a selection of sketches by artist Jacobo Azagury, offering insight into his observational style and love of spontaneous sketching. Working rapidly in pencil and charcoal, often accented with subtle colour, Azagury captured everyday moments and familiar local scenes with expressive, economical strokes. From the lively camaraderie of Sailors at a Bar (Royal Bar), depicting Navy personnel in one of Gibraltar’s once-popular haunts, to the quiet concentration in Old Man Reading, a much-loved piece at the Gibraltar National Gallery, and the introspective solitude of Woman Looking Out of Window, these works highlight Azagury’s ability to convey mood and character with immediacy and empathy. The shelf is a window into his world, intimate, observational, and deeply rooted in the social fabric of Gibraltar.
