Charcoal on Paper
A captivating and intimate portrait, a firm favourite with visitors to the Gibraltar National Gallery. The artist has captured the intensity of the sitter well as he reads, engrossed in the book. Particularly vivid is the sharpness of his right eye, beaming through his glasses, the raised eyebrow creating tension. The way the old man sits, shoulders hunched, leaning forward and the way he holds the book sturdy and firm makes you want to learn what is captivating him. Interesting also is the border Azagury has drawn around the drawing that acts almost like a frame around the figure. The colouring is limited with slight touches of sepia round the cheeks and nose.
