This work may have been inspired by a scene the artist actually witnessed during her time in Madeira where she was evacuated to from Gibraltar during WWII. Leni has distorted the proportions as many of the figures in the foreground are smaller than those in the background taking part in the procession. It seems from the folkloric dress worn by the spectators that the scene is taking place in the countryside. Leni has captured the solemnness of the event, relating a sense of reverential awe. The artist opts for intense use of bold colours. A relatively large painting measuring over a metre in length and which draws the viewer in as part of the audience watching the procession.
