The rooftops of Gibraltar are a common theme amongst Mario’s works, in particular the views of the Upper Town. This one is a view from ‘Road to the Lines’ referring to the defence lines along the Northern front. In this work the artist predominantly uses orange tones with cooler blues contrasting with a sharp vermilion to create the atmosphere of a warm day. The artist experimented with this theme for many years, varying viewpoints and time of day to achieve differing effects and distinct works.
