Mario Finlayson’s work is peppered with influences of other international artists, French painters Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonard being two of his favourite artists. Their influence can be seen in this late work, not just in the colouring and subject matter, but also in the handling of the paint. At times, as on the cloth, the paint has almost the fluidity of watercolour. This is contrasted with the thick ‘impasto’ of the white jug in the centre of the composition. The strict geometric lines of the background are juxtaposed with the flowing lines of the material. The work a veritable and joyous feast of colour.
