Charcoal on Paper
This work is thought to been done in 1944 whilst the artist was in Madeira, where he had been evacuated to from Gibraltar, during WWII. The pencil work brings to life the texture and material of the shirt with swirls and contrasting strokes on the sleeve. The Youth's expression is difficult to interpret with a mere hint of a smirk coming through. His direct gaze and serious expression gives the sitter a more mature demeanour.
