PALABRAS AL VIENTO

By Alice Mascarenhas

Palabras al Viento is the latest book by journalist and broadcaster Alice Mascarenhas. With focus on her father, the late Manolo Mascarenhas and his journalist work, he was already a respected journalist and broadcaster, when he created his weekly Radio Gibraltar news programme Palabras al Viento.

From 1965 to 1970 the programme went out every Sunday afternoon at 2.30pm. Written by Manolo Mascarenhas Palabras al Viento became the voice of the people of Gibraltar at a time of the anti-Gibraltar Spanish campaign of the 1960s. He defended the rights of the Gibraltarians, and corrected the untruths, the false accusations, and the distorted comments reported in the Spanish news media at the time. One could walk from Europa Point to the frontier and not miss a single word of the broadcast.

When the Gibraltar Awards were created in 2008, Manolo Mascarenhas, was amongst the first Gibraltarians to posthumously be recognised with a Gibraltar Medallion of Honour for his services to broadcasting. In February 2005, he had already been one of a handful of Gibraltarians commemorated with the naming of a block in his name at the Edinburgh Estate… a gifted journalist and broadcaster who played a decisive part in keeping up the morale in the face of the intensifying Spanish political campaign against Gibraltar in the 1960s… remembered for his hard-hitting Radio Gibraltar programme Palabras al Viento.

With most of the recordings of Palabras al Viento destroyed only a handful remain. This page has been created so you can listen to Manolo Mascarenhas’s voice in defence of Gibraltar and its people… el pueblo calpense.
